Devon M. Sayers is a Award winning journalist, with over 20 year of local and national experience. He is deeply focused on ethics, compelling story telling, and the effective use of resources.
Devon has been nationally recognized with three Peabody Awards, three National Edward R. Murrow Awards, SPJ Sigma Delta Chi Award for Investigative Reporting, and six National Emmy nominations. His work has been locally recognized with a regional Edward R. Murrow, and New Mexico State Broadcast Association awards for breaking news, newscast, feature news & station of the year.
In his time at CNN, the majority of that working in the field, he has covered stories across the U.S., and internationally on occasion, chronicling stories of tragedy and hope. These field assignments include:
- Numerous mass shootings, including those at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC, Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, FL, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, Santa Fe High School in Texas, Tops Friendly Markets in Buffalo, NY, Walmart in El Paso, TX, the Dallas Police Shooting in Texas, Twin Peaks in Waco, TX and the Georgia spa shootings, among others.
- Civil unrest in Charlottesville, VA, Ferguson, MO, Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Baltimore, MD, Charlotte, NC, Atlanta, GA, and others.
- Multiple weather events, including Category 5 Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica, reporting the anticipation of arrival, during the event, and the aftermath. Along with other Hurricanes that hit the continental United States, tornados in the Midwest and Southeast, fires in the west and flooding events within the interior region.
- Civil Rights stories throughout the south, including the first ever joint interview with the living members of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s entourage from the day he was assassinated in Memphis.
- The last five U.S. presidential elections, the last three in the field, previous two as a desk editor.
- Immigration issues across the nation, including the El Paso border region and Lower Rio Grande Valley.
- The Funerals of Former President Jimmy Carter, Representative John Lewis and Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter in Georgia. And Muhammad Ali, in Kentucky.
- Produced for the Health Unit, including with CNN's Chief Medical Correspondent for the first few months of the U.S, arrival of Coronavirus.
- Rocket launches from Kennedy Space Center, Florida and Launch Site One near Van Horn, Texas.
Devon previously worked as an assignment editor at KOAT in Albuquerque, NM.
He is a graduate of the NPPA News Video Work Shop, and has also attended a number of RTNDA, Poynter, IRE, IJA and local press clubs training sessions. He holds a perfect pint certification from the Guinness Academy at St. James’s Gate, Ireland, and a FAA Part 107 drone license. Additionally he has specialized training in hostile environments.
Devon proudly grew up in Mansfield, Ohio and is a Senior Field Producer for CNN based in Atlanta.
